This is the 27th time Dr. Hensley has taught a Proposal Writing class.
In past courses, he has averaged more than 85% of enrolled students successfully completing the
course by their submitting a proposal to a funding agency
.
More than 95% of the students enrolled complete an acceptable CUES Generic Proposal. More than
40% of the students received some type of funding for their first attempt during their first year of
requesting sponsor support. The percentage of funded proposals jumped to over 60% if unsuccessful
writers revised their rejected proposals and made the corrections suggested by the agency reviewers
and then submitted the revised proposals to the agency for a second round of reviews.
During his career, he has been the Principal Investigator for more than thirty successful projects. Also,
he has served as Co-Investigator on numerous projects. His proposals have resulted in more than 18
million dollars in grant awards from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, the
Office of Naval Research, and private foundations. He has advised Federal and state sponsoring agencies
on research development and administration and helped several foreign governments and universities on
research development and strategic planning. He has delivered many papers at international conferences
and published many articles and several books on the subject of research development and
administration. This specialized knowledge will be shared with you to help you understand the project
development processes and the way funding-agency staff think and work to make money available to
support your innovative ideas.
He has served for more than thirty years as Coordinator for Research and Graduate Studies, Vice
President for Research, and Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in five, research and
comprehensive universities in Illinois, Louisiana, Texas, and Kansas. He has served in several leadership
positions in the professional associations for research administration in North America. In these
administrative positions, he reviewed hundreds of sponsored-project proposals and assisted hundreds of
faculty and students with their proposal development and the conduct of their projects. He considers
the role of research mentor to be the most satisfying of all academic work. Most importantly, he is
looking forward to serving as your instructor and advisor as you complete this course and develop your
project. We intend to provide you with the necessary special services and leadership studies essential to
writing a superlative grant application.
I wish you inspiration, wise decision-making, love for your labor and satisfaction with your work.
